All experiments at the ISS Russian Segment are fulfilled in accordance with long-term Program of scientific application studies and experiments (NPI). The Program has experiments arranged into groups according to the scientific and technical researches' trends. One of the researches' trends is the research "Human in Space". The experiments connected with medical maintenance of manned space flights, including perspective of the flight to other planets, correspond to this trend.

Today I will tell about medical experiment "Cardiovector", which now Aleksandr Samokutyaev prepares to conduct.

"Cardiovector" experiment is designed for experimental check of the hypothesis about changes of the load on right and left heart in weightlessness conditions.
Attempts to check this hypothesis have already arisen. Such medical investigations have been already conducted in years 80-90th at the MIR station, but then it wasn't fated to achieve the result. We hope that CARDIOVECTOR equipment set will allow to make it now.
The following nominal and scientific hardware is used while carrying out experiment onboard the ISS RS:

  • sphygmomanometer TENZOPLUS meant for measurement of blood pressure before the experiment's start;
  • CARDIOVECTOR set providing registration and storage of all the data necessary for the researchers in the onboard computer;
  • RSE-Med onboard medical computer designed for experiment flow management, presentation of registered signals and commands on the screen, received data preservation and storage.

Hardware simultaneously registers ballistocardiograms of three mutually perpendicular axes, and also a number of other parameters (electrocardiogram, impedance cardiogram, seismic cardiogram, pneumogram).
Now I will tell you what ballistocardiogram is. Ballistocardiography is a method of human body motions detection, arising in connection with blood ejection of a heart to the aorta and to the pulmonary artery. Ballistocardiogram principle is based on the third Newton law, in accordance with which "every action causes equal counteraction". Relating to ballistocardiogram it means that blood ejection into the aorta and pulmonary artery is accompanied by the return impulse, recoil transmitting to the body. Graphic record of these body movements was called ballistocardiogram that means literally "throwing implement record"; the name itself "ballistocardiography" originates from the military term "ballistics", i.e. implements' throwing science. Ballistocardiogram's registration is carried out by special devices – ballistocardiographs. In weightlessness the motion's changes should be more noticeable than on Earth.

Ballistocardiogram's registration will be made regularly, once a month, during all mine and Aleksandr's space flight.
In the course of the experiment there will be carried out functional tests with load on respiratory system which will allow differentially evaluating functional reserves and right and left heart work. All that distinguishes new experiment in a quality manner from earlier conducted analogous native and foreign researches.
Space experiment director and scientific equipment developer is the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
During preparation for the experiment's fulfillment the testee can observe measurements' signals on the screen of onboard computer. All signals should be distinguishable in relation to amplitude and not to have the expressed distortions. For ballistocardiogram's undistorted form receiving the testee should be motionless in state of floating with arms outstretched along the body and straightened legs in the course of the experiment. The movements are allowed only in intervals between separate experiment's stages.
