The space experiment “Virtual”Report on space experiment "Virtual" made by cosmonauts Ryazansky Sergei Nikolaevich and Kotov Oleg Valerievich from the ISS RS

Hello, dear visitors of the "Korolev's Planet" website! Our report is again dedicated to medical research. This time we will talk about the experiment "Virtual". The experiment is conducted on the Russian Segment of the ISS to develop a methodology of reliability prediction of visual tracking in complicated dynamic and visual conditions causing disorientation and positional illusion. This medical experiment performed on the Russian segment was also developed by the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
As you know, cosmonauts are regularly involved in performing such critical tasks as spacecraft docking, control of the manipulator located on the external surface of the station associated with fixing visual sense on the object under control.
Since weightlessness significantly changes the activity of gravity-dependent systems and violates their regular evolutionarily-associated interaction, adaptation to weightlessness conditions is usually accompanied by certain sensorial abnormalities. The first evidence of microgravity action is appearance of illusions of the body position or movement in space, dizziness, difficulty in capturing and tracking visual objects. The state is often perceived as uncomfortable.

The investigations were performed using equipment ETD. The use of video oculography equipment ETD is very important because it is only this equipment makes it possible to record not only horizontal and vertical but also torsion eye movements, that is of prime importance in study of the otolithic reflex. During this investigation a cosmonaut can not distracted, so I'll show him performing the experiment only from a distance. As you can see the head of the subject is fixed, that is very important in this experiment. The experiment results will contribute to methodology of reliability prediction of visual tracking in complicated dynamic and visual conditions causing disorientation and positional illusion, improve the performance efference of cosmonauts when performing complicated activities associated with fixing visual sense on the object under control.
