Since April 2013, a brand-new, one-of-a-kind device, charged particles spectrometer Tritel developed by Russian and Hungarian scientists has been in use together with other radiation monitoring instruments. This device is unique in being capable of recording fluxes of charged particles with different energy in three-axis mutually perpendicular directions. As this takes place, interface unit software makes it possible to calculate and display values of absorbed energy, integral equivalent dose and dose rate.

In fact, it is known that all ionizing radiation detectors record just absorbed dose, but in terms of human health effect, it is particularly important to know value of integral equivalent dose which, in its turn, is determined by the function of linear particles energy transfer.

Thus, scientific equipment Tritel consists of detector unit, interface unit which are connected by electric cable and supplied power from electric power system of the ISS Russian Segment.

Also scientific equipment kit Tritel incorporates passive sensors assembly. The system operates in an automatic mode and enables to calculate and indicate data on an absorbed dose, integral equivalent dose and radiation dose power. This data is stored in permanent interface unit memory, as well as shown on display. Space radiation level onboard the International Space Station is 250-270 times as high as radiation background on the Earth. And this is the case, despite the fact that we continue to be protected by magnetosphere of the Earth. In the foreseeable future, flights into deep space are planned. But no matter how far we are going to fly (to Mars, Moon, asteroids or Lagrange points), the key factor in terms of crew members health protection will be ionizing radiation and methods of protection against it.
