19-08-11 01The work of cosmonauts with questionnaires of the Great Start space experiment on August 19, 2011

Prior to the TV broadcast, cosmonauts Borisenko A.I. (ISS commander), Samokutiayev A.M. (ISS Flight Engineer 1) and Volkov (ISS Flight Engineer 2) familiarized themselves with various versions of the answers to the questionnaire that were delivered onboard ISS RS, and selected the most interesting answer to each of the questions

During the TV broadcast, cosmonauts read the most interesting answers and announce the names and addresses of the participants. Each of the cosmonauts reads his version of the best answer.

On August 6, 2011 exactly 50 years have passed since the first one-day space flight performed by German Stepanovich Titov, Vostok-2 spacecraft commander. He stayed in space one day, to be more precise 25 hours 18 minutes, and was the second, but the youngest man of out planet who visited space.

On the Earth, the second cosmonaut was awaited with no less excitement, than the first one. His orbital report laid the groundwork for training of future cosmonauts, for the first time the Earth photos were made.

On July 21, 2011, Orbiter Atlantis for the last time touched down on the runway at Cape Canaveral, Florida. This was the last mission of the US reusable space transportation spacecraft under Space Shuttle program. Altogether, 5 such Orbiters have flown into space:Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour.

On July 8 the RSC Energia museum hosted the ceremony to present awards to the participants in the Great Start project, whose answers to the questionnaire were selected on May 4, 2011, by Russian crew members of Expedition ISS-27 commander Dmitry Kondratiev, flight engineers Alexander Samokutiaev and Andrei Borisenko. For each of these participants a personal souvenir was made, signed by the Corporation President V.A.Lopota and Expedition ISS-27 commander D.Kondratiev. The awards ceremony was conducted by the scientific adviser of the Great Start project, professor, winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation Mikhail Belyaev. The souvenirs were presented to Dmiry Nikolaev (Dolgoprudnyi), Yevgeni Kotov (Serpukhov), Yevgeny Sychev (Yubileinyi). Continue sending us your answers to the questionnaire, and it is possible that it will be your answers that will be selected by the cosmonauts the next time.

Victor Pavlovich LEGOSTAEV

Participants in the Great Start project extend their congratulations to him.

Answers to the questionnaire on the Korolev’s Planet site sent in by participants in the Great Start experiment have been delivered onboard ISS RS (sent onboard ISS RS were only those answers, which were sent in before April 27, 2011).

Cosmonauts Dmitri Kondratiev, Alexander Samokutyaev and Andrei Borisenko examined the answers to the questionnaire.

Your answers did not leave the cosmonauts indifferent and their opinions differed! Each of the cosmonauts named their winning answers to the questionnaire.

04-05-11 02The work of cosmonauts with questionnaires of the Great Start space experiment on May 4, 2011.

The day before the TV broadcast cosmonauts D.Y. Kondratiev (ISS commander), A.M. Samokutyaev (ISS flight engineer 1) and A.I. Borisenko (ISS flight engineer 2) looked through the answers to the questionnaire delivered onboard ISS RS. Their opinions differed, and therefore each of them read his own version of the best answers to the questionnaire (for each TV broadcast).

ISS commander Kondratiev pointed out that the objective of the Great Start experiment was to develop methodology for popularizing achievements of our country’s manned space program using new information technologies. To accomplish this objective RSC Energia set up the Korolev’s Planet web site (only for D. Kondratiev’s TV broadcast)

  • On April 29, 2011, a first batch of virtual satellites of Earth will be sent ot ISS RS.
  • On May 3, 2011, cosmonauts Dmitri Kondratiev, Alexander Samokutyaev and Andrei Borisenko will make a selection of questionnaires of participants in the Great Start project.
  • On May 4, 2011, during a TV broadcast the cosmonauts will read the answers they liked naming the participants.
  • After May Day celebrations, expect to see the first news report about conducting the Great Start experiment onboard the Russian Segment of the ISS.
